Become a part of Neighborhood Watch
Wednesday, March 18th at 6:00 PM
Puyallup City Council Chambers (City Hall, 5th Floor)
Puyallup, WA

Are you a resident of Puyallup and interested in leading or becoming part of a Neighborhood Watch program? The Puyallup Police Department views these programs as vital to increasing the safety and awareness of the residents and business owners we serve.

Criminals don't like to be watched, and when they get the feeling that they are being watched, they go elsewhere. This fact is what gives Neighborhood Watch its power.

While eliminating crime completely is the ideal solution, the next best thing is to move it out of your neighborhood! The Puyallup Police Department and Safe Streets of Pierce County are joining together to bring organized Neighborhood Watch programs back to the forefront of Puyallup's community-based fight against crime. With limited resources, police departments can only do so much to keep our neighborhoods crime-free. By organizing into Neighborhood Watch groups, citizens can provide hundreds or thousands of additional "eyes and ears" to help the police deter criminal activity on their streets, and leave criminals with the distinct impression that they are not welcome in our city!

Informational Meeting

Please join us on March 18th at 6:00 PM in the Puyallup City Council Chambers (City Hall, 5th Floor) for an information and training session for Puyallup residents presented by Safe Streets of Pierce County. Coffee and snacks will be served, and we will begin with a half-hour social time. Beginning at 6:30, Rich Palladino, Safe Streets' Community Mobilizer for the East Pierce County region, along with officers from Puyallup PD's Problem Oriented Policing Unit, will provide 90 minutes of training that will provide you with the tools, information, and resources you need for a successful Neighborhood Watch program. You will receive a resource booklet complete with the information, forms, and contact lists that your Neighborhood Watch will need. Training topics will include:

· Starting a block watch group
· Developing an effective phone tree
· 9-1-1 calls
· Identifying & reporting criminal activity effectively
· What the police need from you
· What you can expect in return from the police

Officers will be on hand to answer specific questions not covered during the training.

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY - There has been a recent trend where thieves have broken into cars to steal the GPS unit that is left on the dash board. A GPS unit is very visible when it is mounted on the dash board or windshield of a vehicle. The theft takes only a matter of seconds and can be done very quietly. The side window is shattered, which does not create a loud noise, and the thief simply reaches into the car and grabs the GPS unit. Victims have reported these thefts most often after they have parked their cars in shopping center and restaurant parking lots. Apartment communities have also seen this type of theft recently.

SAFETY TIPS - We recommend taking your GPS unit out of your car, or at least ensure it is not visible from outside. This simple step may prevent your car window from being broken and the loss of your electronics. Keep in mind that some thieves are clever enough to notice the small ring impression on the inside of a windshield which indicates you have a GPS unit with a suction cup attachment in the car somewhere. They might break your window to look in your glove box for the GPS unit.

HOW TO HELP - To contact the Puyallup Police Department, call 253-841-5415.
